The REACH regulation

REACH is the European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The law entered into force on 1 June 2007.The aim of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. At the same time, REACH aims to enhance innovation and competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry.

Registration :Manufacturers and importers of substances have a general obligation to submit a registration to the European Chemicals Agency for each substance manufactured or imported in quantities of 1 tonne or more per year per company (legal entity).

Evaluation:There are two types of evaluation: dossier evaluation and substance evaluation: Dossier evaluation checks the compliance of registration dossier with the registration requirements. Substance evaluation is performed by authorities when there is a reason to suspect that a substance presents a risk to human health or the environment

Authorization: Substances of very high concern like CMR,PBT,vPvB are not allowed to manufacture and imp &exp unless granted an authorization.

Restriction:

REACH foresees a restriction process to regulate the manufacture, placing on the market or use of certain substances, either on their own or in mixtures or articles, within the EU territory if they pose an unacceptable risk to health or the environment. Such activities may be limited or even banned, if necessary.
